A joyful event in the Orthodox life of New York – a new spacious and well decorated church in Brooklyn

4 October, 2014

On October 4 of 2014, Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York Hilarion performed a festive rite of consecration of the new building of St. John the Forerunner Orthodox church (Brooklyn, Sheepshead Bay).

This new St. John church is located in the building which previously belonged to the Methodist church. But now to the delight of all Orthodox citizens the building is decorated with an elegant dome and traditional cross. We have to remind that for several years the parish literally wandered from one to another leased premises of Brooklyn. It possible to understand the joy of church Rector Archpriest Alexander Belya and all the parishioners, when after a long search they finally had found a worthy premise for St. John the Forerunner church.

The Kadar Elit Construction building company, headed by Mikhail Kadar, renovated a new building in an extremely short period of time. Volunteers and benefactors from among the community with enthusiasm helped to decorate the church. On Friday night here worked finishers, and on Saturday morning, the church hosted the clergy, parishioners and many guests from other parish communities, attending the celebration.

The First Hierarch of ROCA celebrated the Liturgy together with Archpriest Alexander Belya, Rector of the parish and Dean of First Deanery of New York; Archimandrite Alexander (Belya), the Dean of Seventh Deanery of Florida; Archpriest Andrei Sommer (the Ecclesiarch of Synodal Cathedral of the Mother of God of the Sign); Archpriest Petro Kunitsky and Priest Constantine Gavrilkin (clergy of New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia Church, Brooklyn); Hieromonk Photius (Oulanov), clergyman of Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Glen Cove, NY; Protodeacon Nicolas Mokhoff and Deacon Dionysius Lvov (clergy of Synodal Cathedral), and parochial Deacon Petr Utkin.

At the end of the Liturgy, the Director of building company Mikhail Kadar (who reconstructed the building) and churchwarden of St. John church Ivan Belya (thanking to his efforts this building was found and adequately prepared for liturgical activities) received the highest award of ROCA – the Synodal Order of the Mother of God of the Sign (3rd class). For the assistance to the church Vadim and Olga Fedorov, Mikhail Gechko, Inna Stoyan, Andrei and marina Andreyev were awarded with Diocesan Letter of Commendation.

The Address of the church: 2016 Voorhies Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11235 (on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Voorhies Avenue, opposite the Waldbaums shop, behind the old church on the corner).
